Only two main complaints regarding the patch, both of which have been discussed at length here already.
1. I'm really not a fan of the new UI and consider myself in the "please give us an option to use the old version" or "please stop removing basic functionality options and let us set custom color schemes" camp. It doesn't hurt my eyes and I manage fine with it, but I didn't have any problems with the old UI and I'm disappointed even more development resources were wasted (in my opinion). Who is making these resource allocation decisions?
2. PBR is an interesting concept, but the rollout you guys have coordinated was abysmal. I actually really liked the look of the ships before, and my client ran without a hitch on high settings. The ships look less realistic now, to the point where it almost breaks suspension of disbelief - it was easier to imagine myself in space when I didn't think a giant plastic figurine was glued to my monitor. My computer has now overheated twice on high settings, FPS has consistently dropped since the update, and I'm left with playing the game on two brand-spanking-new settings: "Plastic, Lower-Detail Chinatown Spaceship Models" (medium settings) or "WTF Is going on here is it 1995?" (low settings). I'm unaware of people clamoring for redesigned assets, and now we're in the middle of a beta testing assignment for "further improving" the ship models. This quote from Mankiller is particularly telling:
"PBR shows the state of our assets far more accurately than the simple model we have been using up to now. We used to rely on the physically inaccurate numbers to avoid certain display problems, but now we have to tackle those issues directly. Accordingly, many assets will only be perfected through additional attention."
I don't care about the equation creating light effects on my ships, and I've never said "Oh god, did you see that pixel over there? It was slightly different than a true physics model would have displayed it pffffffft goodbye immersion." I wanted a spaceship that blended in with the art design of the game and that looked fairly cool - you guys had already succeeded at this without spending money on any changes at all! I'm playing an online spaceship game, I have an imagination. If the assets weren't all ready, why release them now? Why sell ship skins to players for real money, then completely change how those ships are rendered a few months later?
Overall I feel the new patch schedule has been a failure, and I would like to see CCP return to the 6-month schedule sometime in the future. It feels like you guys are unable to keep up with patching your own patches, and they're coming so fast that it's just becoming frustrating as a player. On the bright side, taking a break from Eve will let me save up some extra cash for a computer that will allow me to play it on high settings again a few years down the road. |
